Throughout its history, Northern Economics has grown organically. Most of our employees joined the company outside of a formal job search. They identified with our mission, values, and work process, and approached us to discuss the opportunities. Other staff have grown into consulting positions from other roles. We don’t engage in headhunting and infrequently carry out a formal job search, so we don’t always know when people are interested in coming to work for us unless they contact us. Intern Program

Northern Economics continuously accepts applications for Fall, Spring and Summer internships via email. The applications are reviewed in March/April, July/August, and November/December for the following semester(s). Please note, however, that internship positions may or may not be available during any given semester depending on projected workloads.

How Does NEI’s Internship Program Work?

NEI’s internship program started in early 2004 and we’ve employed dozens of interns since the program began. We hire between one and three interns each semester (including the summer) depending on business conditions. The fall and spring semesters are open to any college student living/working in the Anchorage area. Summer semesters are open to any college student and to interns who have previously interned with NEI. We recruit for the summer in March/April, the fall semester in July/August, and the spring semester in November/December. We occasionally recruit more than one semester in advance when we find more exceptional candidates than we can reasonably employ in the coming semester.

At this time, NEI internships for BS/BA candidates do not lead to permanent job offers from NEI. All NEI technical staff must possess an advanced degree or equivalent experience.

What do we look for in an intern?
The ideal candidate has strong quantitative and research skills, a mature and professional demeanor, and a desire to learn. Our most successful interns have also exhibited a combination of initiative, exceptional communication skills, and a strong work ethic.

Terms and Conditions
NEI interns work a minimum of 20 hours per week. Summer work may reach 40 hours per week. Each intern’s actual schedule is negotiated prior to the first day of work. The position currently pays $14 per hour. Interns often seek University credit for their time with NEI. NEI will participate in the meetings necessary for the student to receive credit, but the student is responsible for meeting any of the University’s specific program requirements.
